An overview of doping in sports

2019

The history of doping field can be outlined in three major stages: (1) early stage in which drug abuse took place during sports performance and competition and gas chromatography was used for its detection; (2) approximately in the 1970s when androgenic anabolic steroids were introduced; (3) In the recent era when the fields of biochemistry, physiology, toxicology, genomics, genetics, immunology, and molecular biology were integrated and applied routinely. Advanced omics technology and gene doping age may be applied in near future. This review will discuss commonly abused materials, both their adverse and harmful effects, and the alleged benefits in conjunction with the current standards in…

Phagocytosis of erythrocytes in the subarachnoid space at spinal nerve exits

1982

After intracisternal injection of heparinised autologous blood in cats, spinal nerve exits (SNE) of the subarachnoid space (SAS) were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Phagocytes, erythrocytes and erythrophages (= macrophages which had phagocytosed red blood cells) were found at SNE. Some lining cells of the SAS had retracted from the adjacent cells and had rounded up. Cells which formed an integral part of the subarachnoid lining cells also had phagocytosed erythrocytes. Debris of an exhausted erythrophage was phagocytosed by other macrophages. Finally the observation has been made that erythrophages are capable of leaving the SAS actively by migrating through the …

Blood Infusion and the Risk of Haemorrhage in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery with Extracorporeal Circulation.

2016

Purpose: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation (ECC) frequently present haemorrhages as a complication associated with high morbidity and mortality. One of the factors that influences this risk is the volume of blood infused during surgery. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal volume of autologous blood that can be processed during cardiac surgery with ECC. We also determined the number of salvaged red blood cells to be reinfused into the patient in order to minimize the risk of haemorrhage in the postoperative period. Methods: This was an observational retrospective cross-sectional study performed in 162 ECC cardiac surgery patients. Data r…

Clinical and radiological outcome of arthrocentesis followed by autologous blood injection for treatment of chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint…

2017

Background This study was conducted to evaluate the functional outcome and MRI findings of arthrocentsis followed by autologous blood injection (ABI) into the joint space for management of chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation. Material and methods Total ten patients with bilateral chronic recurrent condylar dislocation were included in the study. Arthrocentesis of both TMJ was performed on each patient, followed by the injection of 2 ml of autologous blood into the superior joint compartment and 1 ml onto the outer surface of the joint capsule. Preoperative and postoperative assessment included; thorough history, clinical examination of TMJ, maximal mouth opening, frequency of dislocation, TMJ…
